Tips for successful senior portraits

Whether you love to have your photos taken, or you would rather have a filling replaced, your senior portrait documents a big moment in your life. These portraits are cherished by parents and family members, and immortalize you in your high school yearbook. But the experience doesn’t have to be painful. In fact, it can be fun!

  • PLAN: At Bell Imaging & Design, planning is as simple as having a cup of coffee. We meet (over the phone, in person, or via e-mail) and talk about YOU. About your interests, your family, your pets, and what YOU want from your pictures. Do you want indoor photos or outdoor ones? Do you want traditional headshots or do you want to showcase your favorite car, hobby, or pet? And we talk about what Mom and Dad want from your pictures too.

During the initial planning session, we’ll decide on a time and location (or locations) as well as a package that fits your needs best. I want there to be no surprises when it comes time to shoot or pay. We’ll also talk about clothes and props. I’ll answer questions. You’ll laugh (hopefully a lot). Everyone will leave happy and confident.

  • PREPARE: I’ll check in with you a week prior to make sure we have a backup plan (for outdoor shoots) and to answer any final questions you might have. The night before your seession, get plenty of sleep to avoid baggy eyes and sip on water rather than soda before your session to hydrate your skin.
  • CLOTHES: Lay out clothes you intend to use the night before and iron anything that’s needed. Stash in a safe place away from the family pets. The best colors for you are those that bring out your eyes and that you feel awesome in. Stick with solid colors with small patterns. Horizontal stripes may make you look wider than you are while vertical stripes can slim. And ladies, if we’re working in an urban environment, there may not be a private place to change. Wear a camisole under your shirt for discretion.
  • HAIR: Guys, trim that facial hair or give yourself a clean shave the day of your session and get your hair trimmed a week prior. Ladies, if you’re having your hair styled, try styles out several weeks before. Most of my seniors go for natural hair styles with very little primping.
  • SKIN AND NAILS: Clean up nails (finger and toe) to help your hands and feet look fantastic. Don’t worry about blemishes. We can make sure they’re gone during editing. And refrain from sunbathing (without sunscreen) in the weeks prior to your session to avoid sunburns and their after effects (peeling and red noses).
  • MAKEUP: Ladies, wear makeup colors that accent your best features. Don’t overdo it on the makeup and avoid anything super glittery. Bring transparent powder with you the day of the shoot (guys, this is good for you too!) to block out any shine.

I pride myself on providing my seniors with fun, relaxing sessions where they’re happy about themselves and what we’re doing. If you’re having an awesome time, your photos will reflect this! I can’t wait to work with you!
